Edwards Quote Regarding Sid Going
[edit]I added the quote from Edwards about Going getting the better of him. I randomly came across it and thought it was something interesting and relevant. If anyone out there can reference a quote from Going on Edwards that would be something great to add to the article. - Shudda 20:30, 26 April 2006
WikiProject class rating
[edit]This article was automatically assessed because at least one article was rated and this bot brought all the other ratings up to at least that level. BetacommandBot 11:47, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
You'be got him as being born in Pontardawe and Gwaun-cae-Gurwen. Which was it?
All the best

That photograph!
[edit]Can't someone who knows how, post a more relevant photograph?Ppeetteerr (talk) 03:18, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
- It's not a question of how, but 'if you possess'. The photo is relevant enough, but if you want to see a photo of Edwards in action for Wales or the Lions, then you better have the copyright for it. FruitMonkey (talk) 09:15, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Page move?
[edit]Given that Gareth Edwards (director) has risen in prominence in the last year - directing Godzilla and the first Star Wars spin-off film - would it be right to move the rugby player's page to Gareth Edwards (rugby union)? I suspect these days, the majority of people (if not everyone) are searching for the director, and therefore it'd make sense for Gareth Edwards to be a disam page? Requested move 21 August 2016
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: No consensus. (non-admin closure) Omni Flames (talk) 12:04, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
– Per what HornetMike said a year ago. Gareth Edwards (director) gets way more page views than Gareth Edwards does - in the past 90 days it's been 111,485 for the director and 9,289 for the rugby union player. When you add all of the Gareth Edwards together, Gareth Edwards only makes up 7% of the pageviews. I can't deny that the rugby union player appears important in his field, but he doesn't appear to be of much reader interest, and the director has helmed Godzilla and Star Wars movies - he's not going to be forgotten any time soon. Nohomersryan (talk) 23:18, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose Completely disagree, the rugby player Gareth Edwards is a world leader in his field, Gareth Edwards the film director is not. FruitMonkey (talk) 23:44, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- He's not that well-known elsewhere though, and he's certainly not winning out on usage. Nohomersryan (talk) 00:16, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Usage is not everything. The rugby player is a Level 4 vital article. There is a reason for that. FruitMonkey (talk) 07:07, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- A level 4 vital article ranking is irrelevant, as there are no criteria as to what articles should receive a particular ranking. It's a highly subjective process, and I would say that it's rather broken. If you have a look at the FAQs, it says that there can only ever be 1000 vital articles. But on the project page, there are 1999 vital biographies listed; twice as many as there should be in total covering all topic areas (and not just bios). Schwede66 08:42, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

- Support moves - the rugby union player is clearly not the primary topic. ONR (talk) 05:31, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose I think a rugby union international who has represented Wales and the Lions is much more of a primary topic than a film director with no major awards or recognition beyond working on one version of a famous film franchise. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 07:37, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose - both are brits but even people in UK would think the rugby player first when the name gets mentioned.--Stemoc 08:17, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Support This fits the first of the two major aspects that define a primary topic (emphasis as per the original): "A topic is primary for a term, with respect to usage, if it is highly likely—much more likely than any other topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined—to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term." Nohomersryan has given clear evidence for this. Schwede66 08:34, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose I take the long view - statistics (particularly recent ones) can be misleading. Look ahead 10 years. And I don't agree that he's not that well-known - ask anyone interested in rugby in Oz, NZ, RSA and others and Sir Gareth's name will be up there. Tony Holkham (Talk) 10:05, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Support - per what I said a year ago and the arguments made by supporters above. HornetMike (talk) 12:13, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

- Support: I think there is enough uncertainty about the primary topic, that the disambiguation page should be the one without parenthesis. Mattlore (talk) 20:24, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
- Support. If any "Gareth Edwards" qualifies as primary topic, it's the director. Taylor Trescott - my talk + my edits 03:37, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose One of the best know rugby players ever. PatGallacher (talk) 22:11, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Recent article move
[edit]This page was recently moved from "Gareth Edwards" here. I see above that the last WP:RM was in 2016. But I am still a little surprised that there was no discussion at all, let alone a new RM. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:47, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
